United Stevedores Amsterdam takes two new Liebherr cranes into operation
Ter Haak Group responds to increasing demand for handling containers and project cargo

Amsterdam, 21 August – The purchase of two new cranes has enabled United Stevedores Amsterdam (USA), a subsidiary of the Ter Haak Group, to also handle 8,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) container ships. The two existing cranes were replaced by the new ones (Liebherr LHM 500S) in the Amsterdam Amerikahaven Saturday morning. The new cranes are 25 percent more economical in fuel consumption and thus more environmentally friendly, which is completely in line with the Ter Haak Group policy. Moreover, the cranes have better noise insulation, resulting in a substantial drop in the noise level.

Containers and break bulk cargo, goods that cannot be shipped in containers (including sheet piling, steel coils and steel sheets, granite blocks, aluminium and timber), can be loaded and unloaded even more efficiently with these cranes. Furthermore, the Ter Haak Group is responding to the increasing demand from existing and possible new customers by purchasing the new cranes, so they can also handle heavy project cargo, in addition to handling of containers and break bulk. For example, is handling crane parts for Liebherr's global distribution.

Developments

Container transport is increasing worldwide and with it the need for container handling in the port of Amsterdam . This is becoming more urgent due to congestion in ports such as Rotterdam and Antwerp , where shipping companies are confronting long waiting periods. President of the Ter Haak Group, Richard ter Haak: " Amsterdam has no congestion. Furthermore, a gantry rail was installed at the terminal quay last year because we are planning to purchase a few gantry cranes; thus in the future we will also be able to guarantee fast and efficient handling of container ships."

The new cranes were transported from the new Liebherr factory in Rostock to the Amerikahaven by special transport, and were unloaded on August 16th. Since the cranes were delivered in one piece (completely assembled), they could be used the very next day to load and discharge the Nile Dutch Kwanza as the first vessel.

Heavyweight

The new cranes each have a lifting capacity of 104 tonnes and a joint lifting capacity of 150 tonnes when combined. Each crane weighs 500 tonnes, which enhances stability, and can turn in any desired direction with its 80 wheels distributed over 20 axles. The production speed of the cranes is between 28 and 40 TEU/moves per hour. In addition, the new cranes have a greater outreach and are equipped with a so-called tower extension, and a higher pivot point of the pole on the tower. The cabin is situated higher, giving the crane operator better visibility.
